I work on modern Southeast Asia, writing on the fate of Muslim nationalism and the idea of an Islamic state after Indonesian independence. After getting my BA at Duke, I went to Indonesia for a year on a Fulbright grant to research Islamic institutions and identity formation, based in Jakarta and Padang. In addition to broadening my knowledge of Southeast Asia while at Yale, I will be continuing to study two other areas with which I have an academic history: China and the Middle East. In the time when I should be studying, I also sing (and percuss) with The Citations, Yale's graduate student a cappella group, and work hard to convince people here that "barbecue" requires a vinegar-based sauce and hushpuppies on the side.  In 2009 and 2010 I will again be in Indonesia for dissertation field work, supported by a Fulbright-Hays Fellowship.
