I'm a historian of twentieth-century U.S. culture and politics. My dissertation, "Integrating Mass Entertainment: Struggles for Fair Representation in American Film and Television," examines campaigns by African American, Jewish, feminist, and gay and lesbian activists and community leaders to oppose undesirable stereotypes and caricatures on film and TV, urge more and better depictions of people like them, and seek expanded employment on screen and behind the camera. My broad research and teaching interests include U.S. history since 1865, U.S. cultural history, gay and lesbian history, the history of gender and sexuality, African American history, urban history, and the regional history of New England in the twentieth century.  My dissertation committee is George Chauncey, Matthew Jacobson, and Joanne Meyerowitz. My oral examination fields covered United States history since 1865, U.S. cultural history, and comparative histories of sexuality in Europe and North America.
